LITERARY DEVICES
Here are some common literary devices with examples:
1. Simile
A comparison between two unlike things using "like" or "as."
- Her smile was as bright as the sun.
2. Metaphor
A direct comparison between two unlike things.
- The world is a stage.
3. Personification:
Giving human qualities to non-human entities.
- The wind whispered through the trees.
4. Alliteration
Repetition of initial consonant sounds in a series of words.
- Sally sells seashells by the seashore.
5. Hyperbole:
Exaggeration for emphasis or effect.
- I've told you a million times.
6. Onomatopoeia:
Words that imitate the sound they describe.
- The clock ticked loudly in the silent room.
7. Irony:
A contrast between what is expected and what actually happens.
- The fire station burned down.
8. Foreshadowing:
Hinting at future events in the story.
- The dark clouds on the horizon foreshadowed the coming storm.
9. Symbolism:
Using symbols to represent deeper meanings.
- The dove is a symbol of peace.
10. Allegory:
A story or poem with a hidden meaning.
- George Orwell's "Animal Farm" is an allegory of the Russian Revolution.
11. Oxymoron:
Combining contradictory terms.
- Deafening silence
12. Assonance:
Repetition of vowel sounds within words.
- The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.
13. Consonance:
Repetition of consonant sounds within or at the end of words.
- Pitter-patter, splish-splash.
14. Allusion:
A reference to another work of literature, person, or event.
- She had a smile that could rival Mona Lisa's.
15. Euphemism:
Using a mild or less direct word or phrase in place of a harsh one.
- He passed away instead of he died.
16. Cliché:
Overused expressions or ideas.
- Every cloud has a silver lining.
